10.30.04

What a competitive world we live in.
Everyone is vying for something.
Winning isn't just essential;
it's everything.

We are always looking for something
bigger and better.

Everything is up for grabs at the bargaining table.
Even in sports, loyalty to a team, a city, or a player
means nothing.
If it doesn't produce, sell it.
If he doesn't have a good year, trade him.

Life is all a trade,
and it's all centered around self.

It's all about deal making.

Let's Make a Deal

The Bible is full of stories of
Deal Makers

Esau, the skilled hunter, the apple of daddy's eye,
had been on one of his happy hunting trips.

He returned apparently empty-handed,
but totally exhausted and famished.
He comes home fatigued,
looking for an icebox to raid.

As he passes brother Jake's tent,
he catches the aroma of a pot of lentil stew
and he becomes putty in his brother's hands.
"Hey, brother Jake, how about some of that red stuff,
I'm famished!"

Enter Jacob, one of the original wheeler-dealers.

"Tell you what I'm a gonna do," he says,
"Such a deal I've got for you.
One little birthright for one bowl of stew."

So Esau begins to rationalize,
"Behold, I'm about to die,
so what use then is the birthright to me?"

He had the "There's no tomorrow philosophy."

Eat, drink and be merry, tomorrow we may die.
"Thou fool!" the Scripture says, "Thou fool!"

To the prodigal son, this made sense.
"I may not live until Dad dies,
I will take mine now and do my thing."

So, he took it all but it did not last at all.
It never does. He was not about to die.
He rationalized his way to what he wanted.

So you sell out to the crowd for a bowl of stew?

So Esau was a fool. Jacob was no better.
He was a self-serving deceiver.
"Let's make a deal,"
he comes back with, "You want a bowl of stew?
I've got one. I want the birthright.
You have the birthright.

Let's make a deal.
I want the deal in writing dear brother,
or it is no stew for you."

Satan tried to make a deal with Jesus

First, he waited forty days while Jesus fasted
until He was so weak He could barely walk,
just like Esau.

With snake-like timing,
Satan says, "I see you're hungry.
Let's make a deal.

Just command these stones to turn to bread.
Just think, 'I'll die anyway.'
so misuse the very thing God gave You to save Your people,
Your birthright,
Your supernatural power.
What is important is now."

These are the little bargains Satan sells us.
He leads you to believe it is a losing proposition anyway:
your marriage,
your job,
your testimony,
your reputation,

your finances.
“Misuse the power of God, sell out and bail out”.
He whispers.

But Jesus answered and said,

"It is written 'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every Word that proceeded
out of the mouth of God.' "

He answered, "Get lost Satan,
I can live without that lentil stew of lies.
But I can't really live if I sell my soul to you."

Today, Satan is still trying to
make deals with us:

"You can have it all if you do it my way, without the Cross."

Satan tries to discourage you.
He reminds you that you have failed,
and failed,
and failed again.

Why bother with this religion stuff?
It just makes you feel guilty and
miserable!

Satan tries to convince you that
you don't need to depend on God.

BE INDEPENDANT!

Be sides, what problem is a little
"fun"?

How much harm could
a little drink of alcohol do?
Just a beer?

Feel good.
Forget your troubles.
How bad could a little weed be?

Whose is going to know
how much time I spend
playing my life away
in video games?

Internet porn doesn't hurt anyone,
does it?
I'll only visit one more time. . .

You have choices to make everyday.

Choices to sell out
or
answer as Jesus did:

Jesus looked Satan straight in the eye and said,
"Be gone Satan. For it is written,
‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and Him only shall you serve'."

It is written
It is written
It is written

Only one weapon will make Satan flee.

The Word of God.
The Word of God.
The Word of God;
engraved on the heart

are you caught up in the Esau Syndrome?

Watch out for the Esau syndrome: trading away God's lifelong gift in order to satisfy a short-term appetite.

You well know how Esau later regretted that impulsive act and wanted God's blessing--but by then it was too late, tears or no tears.

Hebrews 12:16-17

Have you made deals with Satan?

We are all infected and impure with sin.
When we proudly display our righteous deeds,
we find they are but filthy rags.
Isaiah 64:5-6

But Jesus made a deal for you.

Long before this world was formed,
God the Father,
God the Son and
God the Holy Spirit
made a deal for you.

The Deal is:
Jesus' life for your life.

"Trade your coat
for the Box #1 or keep your coat
and go for Box #2?"

Jen trades her coat for Box #1

What is behind Box #2 that
she did not choose?

and what did she win for
trading her coat?

The Deal is:
Jesus' life for your life.

your filthy rags
for His robe of Righteousness.

Jesus Christ talks about salvation and
He indicates to us that salvation is really like an
invitation to attend a wedding.

God has an only Son,
His name is the Lord Jesus.

God loves His son so
very much that He wants Him to have a bride.

What an intimate expression of
God's love for us!

God is extending an invitation to every person
in the world to come and be the bride of His Son,
the Lord Jesus.

One of these days in heaven there is going to
be a great marriage supper - a marriage celebration.

God loves every person in the world.

He loves you.

God wants the whole world to come
and enjoy the wedding feast.

Will you accept God's proposal?

Let us celebrate, let us rejoice,
let us give him the glory!
The Marriage of the Lamb has come;
his Wife has made herself ready.
She was given a bridal gown
of bright and shining linen.
The linen is the righteousness of the saints.
"Blessed are those invited to the Wedding Supper of the Lamb.'"

Revelation 19:7-9

We are made right in God's sight
when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins.
And we all can be saved in this same way,
no matter who we are or what we have done.
For all have sinned;
all fall short of God's glorious standard.

Romans 3:22-23

I will sing for joy in GOD,
explode in praise from deep in my soul!
He dressed me up in a suit of salvation,
he outfitted me in a robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom who puts on a tuxedo
and a bride a jeweled tiara.

Isaiah 61:10

Will you trade your
filthy rags for
Christ's Robe of Righteousness?

Will you take His robe?
